What is Erectile Dysfunction?

ED is characterised by the inability to get and sustain an erection long enough for sexual intercourse. Unknown to many, ED could be a symptom of a more serious health issue. Detecting and treating ED early is key to identifying any underlying condition(s), but also equally important in improving the quality of your relationships

What Causes Erectile Dysfunction?

The brain, nerves, blood vessels, muscles, hormones, and emotions all play a role satisfying the male sexual desire. A problem in any or a combination of these can potentially cause ED.

In many cases, erectile dysfunction is caused by a health-related factor such as:

  • Alcoholism or other forms of substance abuse
  • Clogged blood vessels
  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Low testosterone levels
  • Metabolic Syndrome
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Peyronie’s disease
  • Sleep disorders
  • Surgeries on injuries affecting the pelvic area or spinal cord
  • Certain medications and treatments for prostate-related issues

Seeking help for ED can help in early detection of a potentially more serious health condition, which would allow you to seek treatment before it progressively worsens.

Other causes of ED include lifestyle factors, such as obesity and smoking, and psychological factors, like mental health issues (anxiety, depression, etc) and stress, also play a big part.

How Do You Know If You Have Erectile Dysfunction?

It is normal to experience difficulty getting an erection from time to time. However, if this becomes a regular occurrence, you are advised to consult a doctor.

Some signs of ED include:

  • Difficulty getting an erection
  • Difficulty maintaining an erection
  • Erections not hard enough for penetration
  • Erection subsides after penetration

How Is Erectile Dysfunction Diagnosed?

A comprehensive check is recommended to determine if you have ED, and to understand the cause of it. This may comprise a physical check, measuring your blood pressures, heart, lungs, testicles and penis. A physical examination provides preliminary information on the condition of your general health.

The physical examination is succeeded by a look into your history. You will be asked about your symptoms, and medical and sexual history.

Additional tests may be ordered to inform the diagnosis and you may be required to undergo an ultrasound, urine and/or blood tests.

How Is Erectile Dysfunction Treated?

ED is most commonly treated with erectile dysfunction pills prescribed by a doctor. If low testosterone levels are the cause of, hormone treatment can also be administered.

In addition to erectile dysfunction pills, you may be advised to tweak your lifestyle including:

  • Quitting smoking
  • Reducing alcohol consumption
  • Increasing physical activity

If your ED is found to be a side effect of a medication you are currently on, you may have to work with your doctor to find an appropriate substitute. Where your ED is due to a psychological factor, you will be advised to undergo therapy.

The first step is to have that conversation with your doctor.

  • Simply seek medical advice from a doctor via the Speedoc app
  • Select your preferred option - a house call or video consultation
  • Learn if your condition is a side effect of any medications you are currently
  • Opt for additional tests to rule out more serious health condition(s)
